Overview: Varanasi boat ride & Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat

Varanasi, also known as Banaras, is one of the oldest cities in the world and is considered the spiritual capital of India. The city is situated on the banks of the sacred river Ganges, and a boat ride on the river is a must-do activity for any visitor to Varanasi. Here’s everything you need to know about the Varanasi boat ride.

The boat ride starts from the ghats (steps leading down to the river), which are an integral part of life in Varanasi. There are around 87 ghats along the river Ganges in Varanasi, each with its own significance and history. The boat ride provides an opportunity to witness the daily rituals and activities that take place at the ghats.

The boat ride offers a unique perspective on the city, as it allows you to see the buildings and temples that line the river from a different angle. Some of the most popular sights on the boat ride include the Dashashwamedh Ghat, which is the main ghat in Varanasi, and the Manikarnika Ghat, where the cremation of the dead takes place.

The boat ride also offers a chance to witness the daily life of the local people, who come to the river to bathe, wash their clothes, and perform other daily activities. You can see the brightly coloured saris of the women as they perform their rituals, and the brightly painted boats ferrying people across the river.

If you are lucky, you may even spot some of the river’s wildlife during the boat ride. The river is home to a wide variety of birds, including kingfishers, cormorants, and eagles. You may also spot some of the river’s famous dolphins, which are an endangered species.

It is first and foremost important to remember that it is crucial to reserve your boat well in advance to ensure that it is available, particularly during peak season. You can reserve your boat with various travel agents or directly from boat owners. A few boat owners will contact you in the ghats and offer services, but it’s advised to conduct your prior research to be sure of safety and affordable price.

There are various types of boats to be used for the Ganga Aarti ceremony, ranging from private boats to shared ones. Shared boats can seat as many as ten guests and are the most affordable alternative. Private boats provide the most personal experience and let you enjoy the wedding in a more intimate setting, with only your family or your friends.

The cost of booking a boat will vary based on the kind of vessel you choose and the season. It is recommended to discuss the cost in advance and ensure it comes with the assistance of a boatman who will take you to the most suitable location to watch the ceremony.

The best time to take the boat ride is early in the morning, around sunrise or in the evening, just before sunset. During these times, the light is soft and golden, and the temperature is pleasant. The boat ride is also a great way to escape the chaos and noise of the city and enjoy some peace and quiet on the river.

In conclusion, a boat ride on the river Ganges is an essential part of any visit to Varanasi. It offers a unique perspective on the city, its people, and its history, and is a peaceful and relaxing way to experience the spiritual energy of this ancient city. So, don’t miss the chance to take a Varanasi boat ride and make some unforgettable memories
